Two decisions that matter most.
Where the wax comes from. What the pot is made of. Almost every other footprint decision is downstream of those two.
Welsh beeswax, on purpose
Using only local beeswax does two obvious things and one less obvious one. It cuts the carbon footprint significantly, it supports local beekeepers, and - most importantly - it lets us be confident the wax is free from the antibiotics and acaricides used routinely in many overseas operations.
Most cosmetic-grade beeswax sold in the UK is imported. India and China produce by far the largest share globally and antibiotic use to treat colonies is widespread. Combined with poorly regulated pesticide use, that can lead to a chemical cocktail of beeswax contaminants that cannot be broken down or filtered out, and ends up in the finished cosmetic.
A short supply chain from a beekeeper we know is the only honest way to avoid that. That is why our beeswax comes from the Welsh border, not from a wholesaler.
The pot
We have used a lot of containers over the years - the ubiquitous metal tin, glass jars, even fully recyclable aluminium - and never quite felt we had nailed it. Both metal and glass are fully recyclable in theory, but in practice they need a lot of energy to produce and even more to reprocess, and a great many of them never make it to the recycling stream at all.
After several false starts we now use a wood-and-cornstarch composite pot. Made using a relatively new process, it combines natural wood fibres with corn starch to create a small tub that is both light and strong. Two practical bonuses: it is the right size to go through a UK letter box, so we can post via Royal Mail instead of by courier, and once you have used the balm up the pot will compost on a normal compost heap.
They are also rather nice little pots. We hope you reuse them. If you do not, the earth will take them back without leaving a trace.
